My name is Stephanie Johnson. I live in Bozeman and I graduated from Montana State University in 2007 with a degree in Media and Theatre Arts.
Unlike most of my fellow graduates in that field, I didn't run off to Hollywood or New York. I opted to stay in Montana because I love living here. Unfortunately, the opportunities for those in my field are scarce here, so I have chosen to write instead.
One of the ways I write is to blog, and I blog about a variety of things. I have blogged about movies, I have blogged about TV shows, and I have blogged about video games. One of my video game blogs had over a thousand unique subscribers at its peak. My blogging about media has enabled me to find an audience and given me a leg up on attempting to write for a living.
With SOPA and/or PIPA enacted, I may not have had this chance. My writing about these subjects may have been ruled as copyright infringement and been shut down. Where would that have left me? Certainly not in Montana if I wanted anything to do with my field of study.
I urge you to very seriously consider the repercussions of these bills before choosing to side with them. Their ramifications are far-reaching.
A little note I wrote today and sent to Max Baucus, Jon Tester and Denny Rehberg.
