[livejournal.com profile] technophobia gave me 7 user icons to talk about. As is tradition with this meme, if you comment, I shall give you 7 user icons to talk about :D

---

This is the character Osaka from an anime/manga called Azumanga Daioh. Now, I'm not a terribly big weeaboo, but I have seen some anime in my time and this is one of my favorites. Osaka has trouble concentrating on things in class, so this was my Official School Icon for a while. I must confess I haven't used it in a while because I haven't been in school!

Chiyo-chan, from the aforementioned anime. I believe I have accurately titled this icon "Cutest Icon Ever". I use it when I am enthralled about something!

Chiyo-chan in a kitty suit. I use it sometimes when I am in a particularly good mood.

I snagged this from someone else years ago because I thought it was funny. The character here is Kain Highwind from Final Fantasy IV, aka one of my many pixel husbandos. I use this icon when certain people/things are irritating me.

Jetfire (aka Skyfire) is my favorite Transformer, because he likes to do science to ALL THE THINGS. This is him as depicted in a webcomic called "Lil' Formers", which I actually don't read, but the art is pretty fantastic. This is sort of an all-purpose icon; he's making a :V face so I use it when I'm being overly verbose or talking about things nobody really cares about.

This is a moogle Time Mage from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I like moogles, I like bunnies, I liked FFTA (deal with it) and I like horology (the study of timekeeping). Hence, the icon. It has a variety of uses: I use it sometimes when I feel like being a horology geek, or if I'm talking about FF, or sometimes if I just want a cute neutral-ish icon.

I can't remember where I picked up this icon; it just amuses me. It's sort of an "Oh boy, things are about to get crazy, time to hide underneath a blanket and tough it out" icon.

IN THIS POST: Pike denies being a weeaboo; promptly talks about three anime and two Final Fantasy LJ icons.

Can I just finish it? I'm gonna finish it.

Day 24 - Favorite classic game.

...define "classic". Hmm. Let's say something from the mid-80s (or earlier). In which case, Dig-Dug.

Day 25 - A game you plan on playing.

I have several on the list. Let's go with SimCity 4~

Day 26 - Best voice acting.

The correct answer is Metal Gear Solid; YES I AM A FANGIRL AND I DON'T CARE.

"Snake? Snake?? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!"

Day 27 - Most epic scene ever.

Cutscene, or just... general game moment?

...you know what, can I just go with Karazhan from WoW? That ENTIRE dungeon? Cause yeah.

Day 28 - Favorite game developer.

I know this is totally casual and whatnot but I may have to go with Blizzard. Seriously, if I added up all the hours I spent playing Blizzard games, I... I... if it's anything less than an entire year of my life I will be shocked.

This is liable to change at any moment, though, depending on what game I'm currently madly in love with. Right now I could be Firaxis' slave and be happy.

Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving.

Pokemon Gold. I mean, I was excited about it, but also pretty nervous because they introduced a lot of new things that were different from the first and I was iffy on it. It wound up being my favorite in the series, though.

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

Super Mario RPG.

It's really not the best game ever by any sort of standard, but it was the first that really grabbed and held my rapt attention all the way through not just for the gameplay, but also for the story, and as such it will always hold a special place in my heart for showing me what video games can truly do as an entertainment medium.

FIN~

Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you.

This is tough; I can think of a lot of sequels that I didn't quite like as much as the first game, but not any that REALLY disappointed me. I can't even in good conscience say Civ V because I haven't played it.

There have also been a lot of sequels that disappointed me right off the bat but that I warmed up to and fell in love with quickly. I'm not terribly picky or bitter about that sort of thing, in the long run.

I guess I didn't like DKC3 as much as the first two? (DKC2 is still my favorite of the three).

Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style.

Oh now that's just mean because those are two different things. >_>

I reeeeally liked the hand-drawn style of Yoshi's Island. (Have I mentioned lately that I love that game? Cause I do.)

Graphics-wise I don't even know where to start because poor ol' Pintsize (my computer) is beginning to show his age so I turn down all the settings on any newer games, and I haven't had much chance to mess with the newest console generation. Saying Starcraft 2 is sort of a cop out because its graphics weren't even that top tier, but it's the best I've played recently, so I may have to go with that. (>implying I don't have to turn the graphics settings ALL THE WAY DOWN when I play that game)

pikestaff: (Moogle Plushie)
Day 21 - Game with the best story.

I kind of really want to say either Final Fantasy 6 or Final Fantasy 7.

Both of which will make me a RAGING FANGIRL but I don't care~

Day 20

pikestaff: (Giddy Snaps)
Day 20 - Favorite genre.

Implying anything OTHER than strategy is the correct answer.

But yes, pretty much anything under the strategy umbrella. RTS/TBS/Tactics/4X/Simulations/etc. I will eat it all up and then promptly ask for dessert.

Day 17 - Favorite antagonist.

Hey guys, remember when I made a cake and didn't let myself eat it until I beat this game? That was great.

Anyways.

Runner-up is Fawful from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes.

Oh gosh I dunno. Can I be generic and predictable and say Metal Gear Solid?

Day 15

pikestaff: (Rainbow Dash - Not Impressed)
Day 15 - Post a screenshot from the game you’re playing right now.

Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is my current typical haunt.

So this was a troll-tier game I had going on this morning wherein I snagged Liberalism in 900 AD, followed shortly by Gunpowder, and I was going to grab Rifling so I could build up this massive army of Advanced Rooty Tooty Point and Shooties and take over the world, but as it turns out I forgot to turn off Diplomatic Victory and Korea decided to catch me completely off guard and win by doing that with the Apostolic Palace. I was not amused.

This is another game I recently started playing-- Hearts of Iron 2:

It's a World War 2 era strategy game that makes Civ look pretty small time, and I'm still figuring out how it all works. As such, I currently suck at it. In this particular game I was playing as Germany because my reasoning was that they start with such a gigantic army and tech rate that it would be an easier learning curve, but then Poland and France both started kicking my butt simultaneously and that was pretty embarrassing so I NOPE'd right out of there nice and quick.

PONY USER ICON RELATED: It was my face at the end of both of the above games.

Day 14 - Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper.

This is my current desktop as of a couple of minutes ago. It's actually the first gaming-related desktop I've had in a little while-- for several months it's been clockwork, robots, or sexy men in even sexier robot suits! (I'm looking at you, Iron Man.)

Contrary to what SOME PEOPLE *glares at Huxley* may think, the bar along the top is not ugly~

Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times.

Another rather ambiguous question. Merely played, or beaten entirely from start to finish? And does, say, a 45 minute custom Starcraft match count as "beating the game"?

I'm going to assume that it doesn't and that it means played through entirely from start to finish using the game's primary single-player method.

I'm also going to modify the question a bit and make it about which game I've beaten the most, just to be more interesting.

In which case it's probably a tossup between The Lion King for SNES, Mario Kart 64, and The Oregon Trail (throughout its many incarnations), all of which I have played through dozens of times.

In all honesty there aren't many games that I've actually sat down and played in their entirety like that multiple times, though. Even some of my all-time favorites are ones I've only beaten once or twice...

Day 11 - Gaming system of choice.

These days I'm mostly PC master race but my favorite console of all time is, without doubt, the SNES. The sheer number of good games on that console just blows my mind. Honorable mentions to the N64 because I have a soft spot for it, and the original Playstation again because of its ridiculously huge game library.

Not gonna lie, though, I've always liked handhelds. My Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS are still very, very good to me after all these years. When you grow up in a large family like mine, with tons of people around at all times, handheld systems offer a certain sense of privacy and ownership that becomes very important to you.

Day 10 - Best gameplay.

Ambiguous question is ambiguous.

I kind of reeeeeally want to say Yoshi's Island, though. It somehow manages to be both innovative and "classic", at the same time, as well as being easy to play but with just enough depth. I don't know if I've seen another platform game that is really like Yoshi's Island. It sort of just... exists on its own different tier.

LJ icon related; it's what happens in the "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" level.

Edit: Honorable mention to Starcraft, though.

Edit Edit: Portal was pretty freaking great.

Day 9

Mar. 17th, 2011 01:04 pm
pikestaff: (Hero of Time)
Day 9 - Saddest game scene.

As much as I hate Navi, it sort of did sting a little bit when she floated out the window at the end of Ocarina of Time, presumably never to be seen again.

Honestly game scenes have never really moved me to tears, which is perhaps unusual because I'll cry at the drop of a hat when watching a movie (or heck, even just listening to a song), but the vidya doesn't affect me quite as openly, for some reason. So while I can think of sad video game scenes, I can't think of any that truly got to me. I have, however, cried due to merely being attached to my pixels and polygons-- my first Pokemon file being accidentally deleted; various things that happened to me regarding WoW-- and I'm not afraid to admit that.

Day 8

Mar. 16th, 2011 09:18 am
pikestaff: (Default)
Day 8 - Best soundtrack.

...really? I'm supposed to narrow this one down to just one? Really?

You know, I could go the easy route and name a Uematsu-scored Final Fantasy game or something, but truthfully I don't even know if that would be the correct answer in my eyes.

I mean, there is a part of me that wants to pick a video game I have never played just so I can say this. (Seriously, listen to that whole thing.)

And then something like Mega Man 2 is such a no-brainer that it's ridiculous.

Or freaking Donkey Kong Country 2.

Or Hitman: Blood Money.

Or Top Gear.

Or good word, Monty on the Freakin' Run. Really, who knew you could do that stuff on a Commodore 64?

JSRF? JSRF.

I'm kind of obligated to mention Baba Yetu because I could listen to it basically all day. Also for being the first and only video game song to win a Grammy Award, apparently! Which is pretty great.

EDIT: KARAZHAN. NOW. CLICK.

TLDR how am I supposed to pick ONE soundtrack? Yeah um, no.

...not gonna lie, writing this post has briefly made me forget that I've been almost on the verge of tears most of the rest of the morning... them video games, man <3

Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).

Anything other than Lucca from Chrono Trigger is the wrong answer.

(Though I suppose it's pertinent to point out here that every single one of my sisters has informed me that I am Ema Skye from Phoenix Wright, but I'm still voting for Lucca, personally.)

In other news, Daylight Savings Time is gonna kill me.
