Huxley and I were talking about an impending visit just now. We think we'll have enough money saved up to make it happen this next Spring/Summer-- I'd fly over there to England.

Now, I've been hoping that I might be able to have some vacation time accumulated by then (seeing as I've been with Sears Holding Corporation for a year now as of this month-- Sears/Kmart being owned by the same company and all), but I looked into it and it's a painfully slow accumulation process, especially for part-timers. So I'm starting to think that a better bet might be to see if I can secure a new (hopefully better) job, quit the current one, and then spend a few weeks in England in the interim. The downside to that, of course, is that I won't be getting any sort of income during the visit, but there will still be bills to pay, so I'll have to have some extra money saved up.

But... we'll see, I guess. My hope is that work will give me a ton of hours for the holidays and then in January I can see where I'm standing, finance-wise, and then we can actually start planning a visit more seriously. If all else fails I can always get a temporary second job and work my butt off over the spring and then maybe we can plan something for later in the year.

The doctor ran a blood test and she's going to see if I have a thyroid problem. In the meantime, she's put me on a mild medication to hopefully smooth out the panic attacks. They offer free therapy and when a spot opens up, they're going to call me.

They were absolutely right about working with me on money-- the whole thing, blood test, meds, and all, was so cheap that I did a double take when I checked out and they told me the price.

I'm hoping things start to get better soon!

Hey all!

Kmart hired me essentially the second I walked in the door. $9/hour, 30 hours a week to start, and their reply to my desire to move up to full time eventually sounded very encouraging.

I just have to wait a few days or a week for them to finish up the background check and I'll be good to go! :3

After that, I went to PetSmart to visit them. I was greeted by a lot of familiar faces who were VERY happy to see me. There were a lot of hugs and a lot of chatting and catching up-- it was almost like a family reunion. The assistant manager promised me that if I needed any extra hours they would give me an early morning part time spot. So that means that if Kmart fails to deliver the hours they promised, or the job just sucks in general, I have a guaranteed backup.

I love this. I move back to Montana and within about 72 hours I've got not one, not two, but THREE people begging me to work for them. I'm so glad to be back. I knew coming back was a good idea! :D

Oh and did I mention that they sell Mountain Dew: Live Wire here now? Because they do.

P.S. the second I walked in the door at PetSmart a customer stopped and asked me if I worked there. I guess some things never change.

Also I blew up half of a continent

Also global warming is flooding the world

Also I have to hurry and ascend to godhood with Planet before the water wipes out all my bases

And I have to beat Miriam to it; we're basically neck and neck

And we're locked in this brutal war without respite

Dear [Pike],

A forbearance has been applied to your FFEL account(s) through 28-Apr-2012. Your next payment will be due 28-May-2012.

Okay, so! I have one year to figure out my money situation. Let's hope this isn't turn into a repeat of last year, where within months of having "one year to figure out my money situation" my entire world turned upside down and I had to restart from scratch.

So long as I can get a better job before the end of the year (which means to start looking NOW) I think I'll be set.

In semi-related news, I got my paycheck today, so I can let out a big sigh of relief after running around with an empty bank account for the last week. It's not a particularly "big" paycheck, but it was just about spot on in terms of what I need, plus there's a bit left over to apply to my credit card so I'm not just making the minimum monthly payment.

Welp, I'm off to work~

Okay so, you know how in my last post I was talking about how I had a writing project that I was working on back around Christmas that I never finished?

So I pulled it up again to see if it's salvageable, AND YOU GUYS, IT'S HILARIOUS. I ACTUALLY WROTE SOMETHING FUNNY.

First couple of paragraphs:

Amazing. Brave. Powerful. Brilliant. A tactical genius.

Veteran of the Great Dried Corn War of '67, the Pantry Raid of '67, the Battle of Seeds Hill of '67, and Drawer War II of... '68? No, it was '67.

Yep. That's my dad.

You see, he's the Mouse King. And everybody... everybody... knows who the Mouse King is.

...well, mostly everybody. I'm sure the cat will come around soon enough.

This is going to be GREAT, and also, I get to listen to freaking TCHAIKOVSKY for inspiration.

Time to write~

Two of my sisters have now finished reading "Cricket Song". Both of them are basically enamored with it and keep asking me trillions of questions regarding details of the world and characters. In addition both want to draw fanart and both want me to write a sequel post haste.

This is ironic because really, this was just a one-shot I wrote up to get an idea out of my head; I had no idea it was gonna be such a big hit.

Maybe this thing has got more potential than I thought it did...

...inspired to edit now! =D

"I do apologize for the delay, but I do have some good news: we'd like to see a sample of your writing. Can you send along the first fifty pages (or the complete manuscript if that's easier)? Word doc format or PDF works best for us.

Thanks, and hope you have a happy holiday and a happy new year!"

This... oh man for like ten minutes afterward I was shaking so hard that my teeth were chattering... I'm still processing this all... I mean this isn't a done deal, obviously they could still decide they don't like the actual novel itself, but omg, I just shattered the barrier that I was most afraid of, I feel like I can do anything now... intoxicating...

And you know what I don't care that it's a "small time" publisher, it's a real publisher that publishes real books and OMG *flails*

(Adorable pompom version of Windshifter made by my sister. He's posing with a windup toy that I got for Christmas! <3 )

It's part-time. And seasonal (for now). But it's money. (And even part-time it sounds like loads more than I made at PetSmart)

It's Sears! At the mall in Burlington. So it's a drive, but at least it's a pretty drive.

I met my new department manager (I'll be in Tools/Hardware/Home & Garden/etc.) who is very nice, and then I had an interview with the Big Scary Store Manager, who actually isn't really all that big and scary. He was also very nice, and gave me an on-the-spot quiz where he asked me about customer service, stuck a stapler in my face and said "sell me the stapler", etc. I think I went way overboard. Hey, 7 years of sales experience here, of course I'm going to go overboard.

Then he said "Well, you passed this test with flying colors. You're one of the few people who answered all the questions correctly, so you're going to be working for me."

I'm waiting for them to call me back, I'll either be starting this Friday, or next week.

Ironically today is the day I got my Unemployment Insurance stuff in the mail, which I apparently qualified for. Gotta call them tomorrow and be all "JUST KIDDING LOL"

In other news, I met a girl at work today who must have been about 11 or 12 years old who knew more about fish than pretty much any other customer who had ever set foot in our store. She asked me a lot of very intelligent questions, proving she had done her research beforehand, unlike most other people who ask me questions, who apparently don't know what Google is. I wish I was allowed to take her and turn her into my Fish Padawan or something. We need more people like her in the fishkeeping hobby.

I know you all are sick of hearing about my novel rambles but I just got feedback from someone who said it reminded her of His Dark Materials and CLOUD NINE, I AM ON IT.

Achievement Unlocked: [Have Your Novel Compared To One Of Your Fave Series, Which Also Doubled As a Massive Inspiration]

A different reader also compared my villain to Ratigan from Great Mouse Detective, which truthfully wasn't exactly the desired effect but on the other hand, OMG Great Mouse Detective, I AM SO NOT COMPLAINING.

My book is of course far from perfect, I've gotten a lot of great constructive feedback thus far and am super excited to get even more. It's funny because the things I assumed would cause problems and get the most feedback-- are getting little to none, while I am getting feedback on a variety of things that hadn't even occurred to me yet. It's so exciting to hear from non-myopic sets of eyes.

sorry about the friends' list spam

I <3 you guys, you know that?

Sooo much great feedback on my NaNo excerpt. I really appreciate all of you who took the time to read it and comment on it either here or Twitter.

It's given me a lot of motivation and ideas to keep working on editing. Though it's also made me realize how much work I have left to do. I mean, that prologue was basically the best thing out of my whole novel. Well, wait... Sparktender's Major Spoiler Scene at the end is pretty good too. So that plus the prologue is what, about 15 pages? ...so I have about 185 pages to bring up to par with those two scenes, and we're golden.

Really though, just hearing that most everyone at least "liked it" was hugely inspiring to me, and it also made me happy to see I'm not the only one who really likes Sparktender. (He's AuthorCrush Character, in case you haven't figured it out.) I think he's a really strong character and it is really neat to see that others agree with me. Unfortunately this means that all my other characters pale next to him-- including several that are in the book more than Sparktender is-- so. That needs fixing.

By the way, GUYS, LOOK:

[livejournal.com profile] darkyo made this and in the process she also made my freaking year. That's all I'm gonna say. Also you should ask her for commissions and stuff cause she's awesome.
